The Shang Dynasty began around 1600 B.C. and ended around 1045 B.C. The Shang Dynasty was located in China in the lower part of the Yellow River. The Shang Dynasty was the start of China as it is known today.
Their beginning came during the Chinese bronze age. This is where the people learned to make bronze out of copper and tin. The Shang people used the bronze to make weapons. The weapons they made were axes, spears, swords, crossbows, and they made a war chariot. Although they had a big supply of bronze they would use leather to make helmets.
Many men used the weapons in the kings army. The people of Shang had already begun to divide up into the rich and poor. There were poor people who were slaves under the Shang Dynasty’s king. Most men in the Shang Dynasty were in the king’s armies.
This civilization had strong religious beliefs also. The highest god was Shangdi who was responsible for natural powers like wind and rain. Another god was able to send down fortune and disaster on people below. The rulers and people also believed in other natural gods like the Earth, the Yellow River, the god of Mount Song and the Sun.
The Shang Dynasty influenced the start of writing. Some of their writing was written on oracle bones, which are bones of animals. The people would write down their day’s daily activities or things they needed to remember.
They were also highly skilled in craftsmanship. The people of the empire would build houses out of wattle and daub. Wattle is another word for twigs and branches and daub is concrete. These items are mixed together to form a hard surface to make walls in their houses.
The Shang Dynasty ended when they were invaded by the Zhou, a rebel group, who overthrew the Shang capital. The Zhou people believe the downfall was to be blamed on the king for his excessive drinking, indulgent lifestyle, and immoral behavior.
Throughout its long history, the dynasty has had over 30 emperors. The Shang Dynasty was a long lasting empire. The Shang Dynasty made new things like art drawings and statues. They used these materials to make masks that represent animals, pottery, and statues of their leaders.
